Late Harvest Causes Concern for Firearm Deer Hunting Opener
Little Falls, Minn-Seeing fellow hunters during deer drives is always difficult, but because of this years late harvest it will be even more of a concern.
"It's very difficult to see hunters in wooded areas while driving deer, but it's really tough to see them through corn stalks," said Mike Hammer of the DNR.
Because of the unusual amount of rain during August, farmers were forced to leave their crops up longer to dry. According to Hammer this makes driving deer more dangerous than normal.
By law hunters are already required to wear blaze orange clothing while hunting, but because of the low visibility of hunters in corn fields Hammer says hunters need to take extra precautions.
"There's going to be some additional safety concerns. Probably some good verbal communication between drivers," said Hammer.
According to Hammer if they do not take the proper precautions this could be far from a dream season for many hunters. "Corn stalks don't stop slugs or riffle bullets."
