Man arrested after high speed chase Saturday

A call that went out as a man who reportedly tried to drive through Pamida's front doors spiraled into a high speed chase on the county's east side Saturday evening.

Around 6:15 p.m., a call went out to local law enforcement reporting that a man carrying a Bible and yelling Bible verses tried to drive through Pamida's front doors and then fled in a van.

A Pope County Sheriff's Deputy caught up with the vehicle headed south into downtown Glenwood and tried to stop it. However, the driver would not stop and instead proceeded through downtown Glenwood back to Highway 28.

Law enforcement followed the driver eastbound on Highway 28 where speeds reportedly topped out at 105 miles per hour.

The chase crossed into Stearns County where the State Patrol, Stearns County Sheriff's Office and Sauk Centre Police Department helped in eventually ending the chase. A State Trooper deployed Stop Sticks and the fleeing vehicle drove over the spikes, but continued to drive on the wheel's rims.

Eventually, two miles west of Sauk Centre on Highway 28, one of the State Troopers performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT), which caused the fleeing vehicle to swerve into a ditch and stop.

Just after 6:30 p.m., the suspect ditched his vehicle and fled on foot.

The 53-year-old man from Winnipeg, Manitoba was apprehended in a nearby cornfield and arrested shortly after. Charges are pending.

No one was injured and there was no reported damage to Pamida's entrance.

The following agencies were involved in Saturday's pursuit: Glenwood Police Department, Pope County Sheriff's Office, Starbuck Police Department, Stearns County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol and Sauk Centre Police Department.
