Woodward bomb scare determined to be phony

Post by bluegill on January 8th 2010, 9:35 am

A bomb threat yesterday at Woodward High School led to the evacuation of roughly 800 students.

A student reported seeing a “device” that looked like a bomb in a second-story men’s restroom about 9 a.m. at the school, 600 East Streicher St., Toledo Police Deputy Chief Michael Murphy said. It appeared to be a pipe bomb with a computer motherboard and another device attached.

“Turns out, it was a phony. It wasn’t an actual explosive, but it is a very well-constructed phony,” the deputy chief said.

The school was evacuated within five minutes and students were taken to Waite High, where most were picked up by their parents. The remainder were taken back to Woodward and dismissed at their normal time of 3:20 p.m.

Chief Murphy said it was a serious incident considering the panic such a threat causes among students, families, and the neighborhood.

“The important thing is there was no actual device,” Chief Murphy said.
